Our Story

CleanSubSea changed its name from GRD Franmarine in 2018. CleanSubsea is a Western Australian-based company that owns all licenses and patents associated with a revolutionary new, fully-enclosed complete capture, containment and filtration hull cleaning technology called the Envirocart™ System.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to re-introduce environmentally secure and responsible In-Water Hull Cleaning to the world’s ships. Our commitment is to contribute to global efforts to combat climate change and protect Marine Biodiversity.

David Johnston

Honourable David Johnston

Non-Executive Chairman

David has a long and distinguished career in both politics and law. He graduated with a law degree from the University of Western Australia in 1979 and practised for over 20 years as a barrister and solicitor. David was elected as a Liberal Senator for Western Australia in 2001, entering the Senate on 1 July 2002. In March 2007, he was appointed by Prime Minister John Howard to serve as Minister for Justice and Customs. In September 2008, he was appointed Shadow Minister for Defence and was then appointed to serve as the Minister for Defence in 2013 and as a member of Cabinet in the Abbot Government, positions he held until December 2014.

Currently, David serves as Chair of the University of Western Australia’s Defence and Security Institute and is an Adjunct Professor at UWA. Formally David was Australia’s Defence Export Advocate for five years, reporting to the Minister for Defence, Linda Reynolds. He also consults to geophysics company DUG Technology Ltd with respect to High Performance Computing in defence related areas.

Bruce is a scientist graduating from Melbourne University and with forty years as Reproductive Biologist and CEO at Concept Fertility Centre and Day Hospital. He has had a long-held interest in conservation and species protection. He has also had a long history of active involvement in innovative projects and business start ups

He is non-executive chair of Sterequip Pty Ltd and Elan Energy Management Pty Ltd, both being family operated businesses. He is also non-executive director in Global Wildlife Fund and Thylation Pty Ltd

Robert Brian Lawrence

Robert held the position of Associate to the Chief Justice of Western Australia when he was appointed as a Magistrate for Western Australia in 1982, retiring in 2013. Until 2020 Robert was serving as temporary Magistrate. During this period, he was an inaugural member of The Consultative Committee of the National Judicial College of Australia.

Robert is a Life Member of The Association of Australian Magistrates having held the positions of President and Secretary. He was a member of the Council of Christ Church Grammar School for six years and is currently a Community Member of The Prisoners Review Board (Parole Board). Until recently he was a Non-Executive Director of The People Kind Group Ltd and Deputy Chair of Nulsen Group Ltd.

Robert, as a descendant of the founders of the boat building Coy W+S Lawrence, has held a deep interest in the industry and ocean environment for many years.

Rory has over thirty years of experience in both the corporate world and more recently the SME environment. Roles and responsibilities have included P&L and new market business growth accountability as Regional Vice President Asia Pacific, successful establishment and management of APAC JV manufacturing operations, general management in operations in the US and Director of Strategic Planning for a multi-billion dollar business group.

Rory has enjoyed a corporate focus on start-ups, and effective scalable business growth in new international markets culminating in the successful start-up and co-founding of his own business, which is now a market leader in Malaysia and operates across six countries. Rory has also served on several international joint venture Boards and remains a Non-Executive Director of EZ Money Express Sdn Bhd. Rory holds an Economics degree in Finance from the University of Western Australia, and an MBA in International Business from the University of Queensland.
